Some time ago I saw a video in which Milton Friedman spoke about the virtues of free market, and as an example of it he showed and explained a wooden pencil. The materials that made up a pencil (wood, rubber, metal to hold the rubber, glue, graphite, painting…) came from various places around the world, and were treated in others.

Thinking about the travel of those materials around the world and its environmental impact, and linking it to the experiments with paper, I decided to try to make a pencil with only the graphite mine, a sheet of paper and glue. The result was the Ecopencil.

The Ecopencil is more a thinking than a product. The main idea is to save resources to the planet with a simple gesture. Through a simple exercise, to make a Ecopencil saves trees felling, fuel use, exploitation of quarries for the metal that holds the rubber, paints, the cost of the energy needed to process materials…

The Ecoboli is the evolution of Ecopencil’s principles, but applied to a pen. If instead of buying a pen with cover, we only acquire the ink refill and do the same process as we did with the ecopencil, we will be reducing the environmental impact of the final product.

To make an Ecopencil or Ecoboli does not conflict with the aesthetics of the final product. Instead, the final effect is bright and original, and a unique design on each item. If you need to have a rubber, you can make a protective cap and add the rubber on the outside or fix it to the back of the Ecopencil.

Hace tiempo ví un video en el cual Milton Friedman hablaba sobre las bondades del libre mercado poniendo como ejemplo un lápiz de madera. Los materiales que componen un lápiz (madera, goma, metal para sujetar la goma, cola de unión, grafito interior, pintura exterior…) provienen de varios lugares alrededor del mundo, y son tratados en otros.

Pensando en el trayecto de los materiales alrededor del mundo y su impacto medioambiental, y uniéndolo a los experimentos con el papel, se me ocurrió intentar hacer un lápiz con la única ayuda de una mina de grafito, una hoja de papel y cola. El resultado fue el Ecolápiz.

El Ecolápiz es más una reflexión que un producto. La idea principal es ahorrar recursos al planeta con un simple gesto. Mediante un ejercicio sencillo, la fabricación artesanal de un Ecolápiz ahorra la tala de árboles, el uso de combustibles, la explotación de canteras para el metal que sujeta la goma, el uso de pinturas, el gasto energético de transformación de los materiales…

El Ecoboli es la evolución del mismo principio del Ecolápiz pero aplicado a un bolígrafo. Si en lugar de adquirir un bolígrafo con carcasa únicamente adquirimos la recarga de tinta y hacemos el mismo proceso del Ecolápiz, estaremos disminuyendo el impacto medioambiental del producto final.

Al contrario de lo que pueda parecer, fabricar un Ecolápiz o un Ecoboli no está reñido con la estética del producto final. Al contrario, el efecto final resulta original y llamativo y con un diseño único en cada objeto. Si se necesita goma para borrar, se puede fabricar un tapón protector y añadirle la goma en el exterior o bien adherirla a la parte trasera del propio Ecolápiz.
