This work is the result of exploring new ways to reuse paper. The base is made reusing a wood pallet, the structure is made braiding paper, and it also contains reused paper to fill the inside.

Presented in the Salone Satellite 2011 (Milano), the Sofa Away is far away from the conventional ways to create furniture. This piece is not only an art work and a functional object, it is also an statement that shows the power of reused paper as an structural and decorative material.

Esta obra es el resultado de explorar nuevos caminos para reutilizar papel. La base está realizada reutilizando un palet de madera, la estructura está hecha trenzando papel, y también contiene papel reutilizado para rellenar el interior.

Presentado en el Salone Satellite 2011 (Milano), el Sofá Away está lejos de la forma convencional de crear mobiliario. Esta pieza no es únicamente una obra artística y un objeto funcional, es también una declaración que muestra el poder del papel reutilizado como material estructural y decorativo.

While exploring new paths to reuse paper, I found that braided paper strips are really strong and flexible, what was tested in the Sofi Chair. Later, I thought to use also a flexible interior instead of a rigid structure for developing a new object that I wanted to be shown in the Salone 2011 in Milan. I realized about the versatility of paper balls just at the same time I throwed one to the recycle bin and missed the shot.

The Sofa Away is filled with paper balls. The balls modify the original braided shape and distribute the weight around the base. The base is made reusing a pallet, where it is a small door to fill the inside with more paper balls if it is needed. Then, the Sofa Away helps to reuse your own wasted paper for your furniture.

Al explorar nuevos caminos de reutilizar papel, me dí cuenta de que las tiras de papel trenzadas son fuertes y flexibles, lo que fue probado en la Silla Sofi. Después pensé en usar también un interior flexible en lugar de una estructura rígida para desarrollar un nuevo objeto que quería enseñar en el Salone 2011 en Milan. Me dí cuenta de la versatilidad de las bolas de papel al mismo tiempo que tiré una a la papelera de reciclaje y erré el tiro.

El Sofá Away está relleno de bolas de papel. Las bolas modifican la forma trenzada original y distribuyen el peso alrededor la base. La base está hecha reutilizando un palé, donde hay una pequeña puerta para rellenar el interior con más bolas de papel si es necesario. El Sofá Away ayuda a reutilizar tu propio papel desechado para tu mobiliario.

The external graphic design is a challenge. Every design on every strip is choosen to show faces and other body parts, colours or selected texts. While braiding the strips, every part of the strips that is finally shown is selected trying to create a colorful collage. That makes the Sofa Away a creation between art and design, defined by the artistic expression of the designer. A thin layer of transparent varnish is applied in order to protect the object from the water and also give more strength to the whole structure.

As every work of the retrain project, the Sofa Away is a unique piece. Even if the same shape with the same components and also with the same paper is used, it is impossible to repeat the object in the same result. The aim is to develop objects that are completely determined by a specific moment and place.

El diseño gráfico exterior es un reto. Cada diseño de cada tira está escogido para mostrar caras y otras partes del cuerpo, colores o textos seleccionados. Al trenzar las tiras, cada parte de las tiras que finalmente se muestra está seleccionada intentando crear un colorista collage. Esto convierte al Sofá Away una creación entre el arte y el diseño, definida por la expresión artística del diseñador. Se aplica una fina capa de varniz con el propósito de proteger el objeto del agua así como para reforzar toda la estructura.

Como cada obra del proyecto retrain, el Sofá Away es una pieza única. Incluso si se usa la misma forma con los mismos componentes e incluso el mismo papel, es imposible repetir el objeto con el mismo resultado. La intención es desarrollar objetos que están complatamente condicionados por un momento y lugar específicos.

The ottoman has been developed to test the power of this new technique. The result is a strong object suitable for functional and also artistic purposes.

La otomana se ha desarrollado para probar el poder de esta nueva técnica. El resultado es un objeto fuerte, apropiado para propósitos tanto funcionales como artísticos.

Retrain Workshop

“Creative furniture design reusing and transforming waste materials – first encounter: paper and cardboard” is the title of the first workshop organized by Retrain in association with MA·KA GREEN BCN.

The objectives of the workshop are:
– Encourage the reuse of waste materials before recycling them.
– Experiment and explore the emulation of several materials while transforming others.
– Enchance creativity and imagination in favor of environmental awareness.
– Learn how to create new objects that are durable, functional and valuable from waste materials.
– For this first meeting, become familiar with specific techniques applied to paper and cardboard: roll, braid, fold, cord and assemble.

From 17:00 to 20:00.
16-19 december of 2010 in Barcelona.

“Diseño creativo de mobiliario reutilizando y transformando materiales de desecho – primer encuentro: papel y cartón” es el título del primer workshop organizado por Retrain en asociación con MA·KA GREEN BCN.

Los objetivos del workshop son:
– Fomentar la reutilización de materiales de desecho antes de su reciclaje.
– Experimentar y explorar la emulación de varios materiales transformando otros.
– Potenciar la creatividad y la imaginación a favor de la concienciación medioambiental.
– Aprender a crear nuevos objetos que sean duraderos, valiosos y funcionales a partir de materiales de desecho.
– Para este primer encuentro, familiarizarse con técnicas específicas aplicadas a papel y cartón: enrollado, trenzado, plegado y doblado, encordado y ensamblado.

De 17:00 a 20:00.
16-19 diciembre de 2010 en Barcelona.

The workshop is intended to be delivered in sessions of 3 hours for 4 days. It is structured into 4 different phases that are:
– Explanation of objectives and theoretical basis (including specific techniques).
– Definition of workgroups and group projects.
– Object creation and implementation of the specific techniques of transformation.
– Test, exposition and discuss of the results.

Throughout the development of the workshop, the organizer (Rubcn) will be available for possible questions, advices or instructions, and will coordinate the work and guide participants to be able to meet the objectives.

To make the workshop it is required a minimum of 8 participants and a maximum of 16.
Registration fee:
– Special offer: 95€ per participant, until 10 December.
– 110€ per participant, from 11 December.

The participants are compromised to:
– Facilitate the smooth running of the workshop and do not interfere with the work of other participants.
– Help the collection of cardboard and waste paper if provided is insufficient.
– Give the works developed in case of having the option of having an exhibition about the workshop or other events that require it.

El workshop está pensado para ser impartido en sesiones de 3 horas durante 4 días. Se estructura en 4 fases diferentes que son:
– Explicación de objetivos y de las bases teóricas (incluidas las técnicas específicas).
– Definición de grupos de trabajo y de proyectos por grupo.
– Creación de los objetos y puesta en práctica de las técnicas específicas de transformación.
– Prueba, muestra y puesta en común de los resultados.

Durante todo el desarrollo del workshop el organizador (Rubcn) estará disponible para posibles dudas, consejos o indicaciones, e irá coordinando el trabajo realizado por los participantes y asesorándoles para que sean capaces de cumplir los objetivos.

Para poder realizar el workshop se requiere un mínimo de 8 participantes y un máximo de 16.
Precio de inscripción:
– Oferta de lanzamiento: 95€ por participante, hasta el 10 de diciembre.

Present Table | Mesa Present

Made with reused paper from newspaper and magazines that came into my mailbox. Reused paper is used as structure, as skin and also as external graphic design, by using different process techniques. The Present Table is finished with a colorful photo collage on the top, that represents a subjective view of all the different creation phases.

Hecha con papel reusado de periódicos y revistas que llegaban a mi buzón. El papel reusado es empleado como estructura, como piel y también como diseño gráfico exterior, mediante el uso de diferentes técnicas de proceso. La Mesa Present está acabada con un collage fotográfico a todo color en la parte superior, que representa una visión subjetiva de las diferentes etapas de creación.

The Present Table is almost 100% made from reused paper. The structure is made of paper tubes, joint with small wooden sticks and linen cord. The cover is made by braiding paper strips with tubes that work as wicker, becoming a combination that allows strength and aesthetic value. The legs were reinforced with sisal cord and covered with an external decorative layer.

The Present Table shows very clearly the material that is made from and plays with it. Collages of images are present all over the object. The creation of the object produces the external visual aspect at the same time, generating a color mosaic derived from the own material. The top is a collage that represents the author’s vision about the different creation phases of the object.

The unions are hidden with paper that has printed figures in it, those figures return our gaze to the curious and protect the union. The Present Table makes an evolution of the visual language generated by the material reuse, as it did the Átomo Stool.

La Mesa Present está realizada casi al 100% con papel reusado. La estructura está hecha con tubos de papel, unidos éstos con finas varillas de madera y cuerda de lino. La cubierta está realizada trenzando tiras de papel con tubos que funcionan a modo de mimbre, combinación que promete una gran resistencia y elevado valor estético. Las patas se reforzaron con cuerda de sisal y se decoraron exteriormente con papel.

La Mesa Present muestra muy claramente el material del cual está hecho y juega con él. El collage de imágenes está presente en todo el objeto. La creación del objeto produce a su vez el aspecto visual externo del mismo, generando un mosaico de colores derivados del propio material. La parte superior es un collage intencionado que representa la visión del autor sobre las diferentes fases de creación del objeto.

Las uniones se han ocultado con papel con figuras impresas en él, que devuelven la mirada a los curiosos y protegen la unión. La Mesa Present evoluciona el lenguaje visual generado por el reuso del material, al igual que hizo el Taburete Átomo.

It is made with reused paper from newspaper and magazines by rolling, braiding and cording paper. It is protected with a thin varnish layer, and the external design is customized by choosing the best images available on the selected paper.

Está hecho on papel reusado proveniente de revistas y periódicos mediante enrollado, trenzado y encordado. Está protegido por una fina capa de barniz, y el diseño exterior está personalizado escogiendo las mejores imágenes disponibles en el papel seleccionado.

The atomo stool is an almost 100% reused paper object. All the components are made with paper, a few wooden sticks, linen cord and some glue.

The seat is made by braiding paper. It has similar properties as wicker, and a impressive visual aspect. All the stool is reinforced by a thin glue layer, which is needed to fix and protect the object.

Paper tubes are made with the wooden core technique, and exterior graphic design is a result of choosing the most attractive and colorful sheets available on the printed newspapers and magazines used to make this stool.

The strength and visual aspect of the object is surprising. The atomo stool spread the forces by its structure, avoiding weak points. The central structure with the ball-shaped union is the secret of its strenght, and gives the name to the stool due to the analogy with an atom shape.

Below these lines there are some photos that may help you to understand how the structure was made. They also show the unions and some of the materials used. The atomo stool is unique, and shows the potential of reused paper.

El taburete átomo es un objeto casi 100% papel reusado. Todos los componentes están hechos de papel, unos cuantos palitos de madera, cuerda de lino y algo de cola.

El asiento está hecho tenzando papel. Tiene propiedades similares al mimbre, y un aspecto visual impresionante. Todo el taburete está reforzado por una fina capa de cola, necesaria para fijar y proteger el objeto.

Los tubos de papel están hechos con la técnica del núcleo de madera, y el diseño gráfico exterior es el resultado de escoger las hojas más atractivas y coloridas disponibles en los periódicos y revistas impresos usados para hacer este taburete.

La fortaleza y el aspecto visual del objeto es sorprendente. El taburete átomo reparte los esfuerzos por su estructura, evitando puntos débiles. La estructura central con la unión en forma de bola es el secreto de su resistencia, y da el nombre al taburete debido a su analogía con la forma de un átomo.
